This is the story of why Live The Duck Out Of Life exists — and why it matters more than ever.
Janet Marie Shackelford
The Founder
I have spent the last 15 years working with people through grief, trauma, and life's hardest transitions — helping them find their way back to themselves after loss. And somewhere in all of that, I forgot about my own life.
Then came the year that changed everything. A TBI. A body that stopped working the way it used to. A near-death experience in 2024 that cracked me wide open — my second in this lifetime, the first being when I was just 13 years old.
Facing your own mortality has a way of making things very clear. I had watched so many people leave this world carrying the weight of unlived dreams — adventures they never took, moments they assumed they'd always have more time for. I didn't want that to be my story. And I don't want it to be yours.
Behind this movement is a real person. A mom of two boys who lost her own mother at six years old, and her brother to violence. A military veteran. Someone who has carried grief, trauma, and fear in more forms than most people know — and who spent years too scared to try anything new, until life itself forced her hand. A dog lover, an artist, and an author. And someone who — after everything — finally decided to stop waiting and start truly living.
Live The Duck Out Of Life is for me as much as it is for you. This is us choosing to show up for our own lives — together.
"Too many people leave this world with their best life still inside them.
That ends here."
What we stand for
01
Not when things calm down. Not when you lose the weight or get the promotion or feel ready. Now. The bucket list doesn't wait.
02
The hardest chapters of your life are not something to hide. They are the very thing that could save someone else. Share them.
03
You may be in a wheelchair. You may have lost someone. You may be rebuilding from scratch. You are still here. That is everything.
04
Even in grief. Even in pain. Even in the middle of the hardest season of your life — there is still something worth smiling about. We help each other find it.
The vision
We are building a space where people can come to read real stories, share their own, find community, and be reminded that their life is worth living fully. A shop full of things that carry that message. Resources for people navigating grief, trauma, and change. And a whole lot of encouragement to go do the things you keep putting off.
